Yoga Class Tips & Etiquette:
*Class fee varies by location. Students will not be turned away due to an inability to pay a fee. If you have financial needs, please let Marty know.
*Required: sticky-style yoga mat. Top quality mats available from Marty for $20 and up (new), ask for details. Other basic props can be very helpful tools to advance your practice, such as a Falsa blanket (more commonly known as a Mexican blanket), a yoga strap, a bolster, and a yoga block or two. These props are provided for most classes, depending on location and class size. All props are available for purchase, if you would like to purchase a mat or props, contact Marty in advance of your first class.
*Show up early for class (at least 10 min.) and spend a few moments settling in and breathing; coming in late or at the last minute is distracting and disrespectful to not only your teacher, but also to yourself and those who arrived on time/early to prepare for class. Please come early to your first class to allow time to fill out the short health waiver form.
*Hands-on adjustments are a part of class (meaning that Marty will use her hands to physically adjust your alignment or deepen your experience of a yoga pose). Marty has an extensive background in bodywork, and will occasionally weave bodywork into the flow of class. If you prefer not to be adjusted, please inform Marty BEFORE class begins.
*Please turn off your cell phone before class begins. This is a time to UNPLUG and tune in.
*Wear comfortable athletic-style clothing. Baggy clothing and street clothes will restrict your ability to practice certain poses. Dress in layers, practice rooms may feel chilly at the beginning/end of class.
*Respect the personal space of others; keep your eyes on your own practice/pose, ask permission prior to stepping on another's mat or touching their body.
*Yoga is not a competition or race; practice at your own pace and choose modifications appropriate for your experience level. You are responsible for your body during class; respect your body's limitations (they will be different each day).
*The yoga practice room is considered a sacred and safe space; refrain from conduct or conversation or conduct that would violate this space (example: this isn't the place to look for a date or complain about your tyrant boss).
*Style of yoga varies by class. Be sure to attend a class that is appropriate for your experience and fitness level. Pose modification will be offered so that beginners and intermediate students can practice at the appropriate level of challenge while sharing the same class, please work with the modification appropriate for your body.
*If you have questions, ask Marty! Yoga is likely one of the most unique things you have ever experience, and it is also likely you will have lots of questions, even after practicing for months and years - it is a life-long learning process with limitless possibilities. Find Marty before/after class or contact her via email or phone anytime.
